COAST TRADES COUNCIL

ELECTION OF OFFICERS At the annual meeting of the West Coast Trades Council held on September 23, the following officers were elected: President, Mr C. Elley; secretary-treasurer, Mr T. P'ratt; vice-president, Mr J. Doyle; National Councillor, Mr T. Pratt; executive, Messrs R. Hall, J'. Walton, H. Robinson, G. Croft. A well-attended meeting dealt expeditiously with a large amount of business. The matter of open-cast coal-mining was discussed and the Council decided to support the United Mineworkers’ Union in its opposition to the proposal of the Minister of Mines to bring this class of mining under the Quarries Act. It was also decided to protest against private enterprise being used at Stock■cn to work the State-owned opencast mine.

It was decided to establish a consumers’ price control committee to co-operate with the Price Tribunal and its officers to combat over-charg-ing and profiteering on the West Coast, it being pointed out that similar committees were operating successfully in other centres. A report was given of the Council executive’s meeting with the Milk Enquiry Committee, which sat in Greymouth recently, and enlightening'facts were disclosed concerning the Government’s policy in regard to the milk, industry. The balance-sheet revealed that the ’Council is in a satisfactory financial position.
