Owing to bomb damage and dilapidation, the result of five .years’ neglect, the Derby is not likely to oe run at Epsom before 1946. lhe racecouse was first bombed in 1940 when the main building and also the restaurants and kitchens were hit, and the large tote in front of TattersaLs destroyed. 3 „ A new war-time record price for a yearling, 12,500 guineas, was .paid pt the Newmarket bloodstock sales for a colt by Hyperion out of a Buchan mare. The bidding for this colt started at SOOOgjns., and developed into a duel between the agents of the Aga Khan aMd the Gaekwar of Baroda. The chief ' buyer to-day was the Aga Khan. His agents spent 38,400 gns. on four lots, the chief of which was the Sledmere Stud . colt by Hyperion from Queen Christina. For ,a filly by Fairway from Correa 9300 guineas was paid. Other high prices were: 6700gns on behalf of the Aga Khan for a filly by Hyperion from Olien; 5100gns for a filly by 'Eois Roussel from Embuche; 5000gns for a colt by Fairway from Evpona; 3700gns for a colt by Mieuxcee from Renate; 3300gns for a colt by Precipitation from Boquet; 3000gns for .a colt by Khan Bahdur from Mollflagon; a colt by Legend of France from Lonepat; a Ally y Turkhan from Miss Dewar, and for a filly by Fair Trial from Ivy Grey; 2800gns for a filly by Bois Roussel from Good Apple, and 270Qgns for a colt ■ by Fair Trial from Organdie. The aggregate for the day was 251,400 guineas and the total for two days was announced as 345,150gn5. for 311 lots, which is an average ot lllOgns. This approximates closely to the record return of 1928. RACING AND TROTTING Left at Start: . There was a lot of support tor Saludos in the-' Spring Hack at Wanganui, but he swung round as the barrier lifted and was left standing. Saludos, a member of S. mcGreal’s team is reputed to be a hack above the average. Novice Hurdler:

For a novice, Fairy Bard was i’esponsible for a sound effort in the hurdle race at Ashburton, when he finished a fair fourth. The Niggei’ Minstrel gelding had done Lttie schooling prior to the race, and he should be an improved horse as a result of the outing. Going North: ■ The Wrack pacer, Erinack, has been purchased by a northern sportsman and she will join R. A. McMillan’s team at Tamahere. When trained at Addington by J. Young, Erinack won the Greymouth Trotting Cup of 1943 in 4.35 3-5 for the two miles. In February of the same year she was successful in the Trial Handicap at Addington in 4.25 3-5. Last season Erinack contested 16 races, for a third to Parshafi and Purveyor in the Avon Handicap at Addington in October. H-ir time on that occasion was 3.15 3-5 for the mile and a-half. Age does a lot for the Wrack breed, and this mare should be capable of holding her own with those in her class in the north.

Master Ted Unlucky: Master Ted is reported to have been unlucky to be beaten by the favourite, Alright, in the Wanganui Guineas. Beginning smartly, Master j.ed was early in the van, buc at the end of two furlongs Tifox and Stony Broke raced past him, with Alright just in behind. With half a mile to run difox was just clear of Master Ted and then came Stony Broke and

Alright together. Turning for home Tifox ran wide, taking Master Ted with him, Alright coming through to take charge. Once balanced Master Ted carne home strongly, out Alright Went on to ''win by three-quarters or .a length with Tifox three lengths further back and then a gap to Comrade. After the race an enquiry was held into the alleged interference by Tifox with Master Ted, but it was decided no action/ be taken. Encouraging Effort: The three-year-old Broieform was responsible lor a creditable performance when he finished second to the five-year-old Extra in the second division of the Trial Plate at the recent Avondale meeting. Broieform fought on very gamely at the end and it seems as if he will be an early winner. By Broiefort from Spearform, Broieform is a full-brother to the Railway Handicap winner Sweet Biscuit .and a half-brother to the New Zealand Cup winner Classform. Bred as he is Broieform should be capable of running out a middle distance and he should be worth following from now on. Easy for Whackie: The chief sprint at Wanganui was easy for Whackie. The first to show out were Black Plato, Theolateral, Sunblaze and Plato Lad. At the half-mile Whackie had run up to be on terms with Black Plato and Theolateral. Shortly after Whackie got to the front his nearest attendants were Plato Lad, Theolateral and Black Plato. Turning for home Whackie was clear of Plato Lad, Theolateral and Park Light, and giving nothing else a chance he drew out in the run down the straight to win by two lengths from Black Plato, with Plato Lad a length further back. Crammond Bay and Park Light were at the head of the rest.

Likely Stayer: A member of G. W. New’s big team at Awapuni, Langue d’Or is looked upon as one of the likely young stayers to make good this term. Last season he had four wins, the first when trained by F. Christmas at Riccarton. He was successful three times fox’ New and on each occasion he won ovex- one and a quarter miles, the last time mastering the steadier of 9.6. Langue d’Ox' is a four-year-old bay gelding by Lang Bian from Princess Doreen. Under' light weights he should soon be a winner in open class.
