THE GOLD HOLD-UP OPPOSED.
(Rec. 11.40.) NEW YORK, August 17. The “New York Times’s” Washington correspondent, referring to tne “freezing” of Argentina’s gold, says: The United States Government is considering the application of mucn stronger economic pressure on Argentina. However, a group within tne State Department, as well as the British, oppose this step. They are pointing out that Argentina supplies a great quantity of the meat for the Allied troops and civilians in Britain. For that reason, if the Argentine meat were to be cut off, the United States must be prepared to make up the deficit. This has raised a delimma lor the United States administration, which is not prepared, in view of the forthcoming elections, to impose additional rationing on the American people so as to send meat to England. The officials confirmed that the free flow of gold to Argentina has been halted. He explained that Argentina is now restricted in the same way as Sweden, Portugal, Spain and Ireland.
