HOKITIKA, Aug. 18

The Borough Council at its monthly meeting struck rates of two shillings in the pound, plus 2d in the £ for the harbour. Crs W. H. Stopforth and L. S. Ross were deputed to seek help from the County, Council towards cemetery upkeep. Crs H. C. Peart and S. Roberts were appointed to the Milk Zoning, Committee. It was decided to adopt a method set out by Mr Morrison for numbering houses. In response to a petition with 65 signatures, it was decided to extend billiard room hours to 11 p.m. Cr Peart stated private cars were parking outside the Gold Band Taxis. It was decided to take no action, such cars being allowed five minutes for parking. It was decided to ask the Cricket Club for a donation towards the laying down at Cass Square of a concrete pitch which the club requested. The Council adopted the Mavor’s report in favour of continuing the present Fire Board, instead of the Council itself controlling the Fire Brigade. An overdraft limit of £6OOO was decided on. Abattoir fees last month were £BO. It was decided to prohibit' cows being tethered hi any street where trees are being planted. The Beautifying Society’s request to permit tree planting in Stafford Street was held over.

The Harbour Board at its usual meeting accepted a tender of £25 from J. S. Langford for the Board’s weighbridge. It was decided to sell the weighbridge office. It was. decided to ask Ross Borough Council to adopt strong measures to collect harbour rates and arrears in Ross. The transfer of a section from R. Ferguson to W. Johnson was approved. Tne signalman, Mr Howe, reported that the bar was running in a north-westerly direction, carrying from 9 to 12 feet, with a depth of 18 feet at low water at the main wharf, which depth continued to the loading berths.
