rour Own Correspondent.l Mr and Mrs H. Le Compte, of Chr’stchurch, took over the Empire Hotel on Wednesday from Mr J. J. Ryan, who leaves next week on a visit to the North Island. Constable G. Cleary who has been on annual leave, has resumed duty ana Constable G. Murphy h.as returned to Reefton. Messrs E. Gillman, W. E. Simes (Christchurch), C. Kettle, G. Holloway and T. Johns (Greymouth) were visitors here during the week. Mr Fred Bannan (Wellington), is visiting relatives at Blackwater. Misses Daphne McDonald and V. Thomas were visitors during the week-end. , ~ Mrs Gordon Ward, and daughter Ray, are visiting Christchurch. Residents heard with regret of the deaths of two former wellknown residents, Mr Jack Hall and Mr Fred Sara. The sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved. Mrs Chas. Thorne who has been visiting Greymouth, has returned. Mrs Faltorini, senr., of Reefton, is a visitor here, as the guest of her daughter, Mrs J. McMahon. Mr A. Leggoe is spending a few davs in the township as the guest of "his daughter, Mrs Alf Bright. A farewell social was extended to Cpl J. French in the Institute Hall last Friday evening, when there was a large attendance. Mrs N. French (mother) and Mrs J. French (wife) of the departing guest were presented with bouquets by Mrs R. Robertson. Mr J. C. Rodden, chairman of the Entertainment Committee, in presenting an envelope, wished the recipient a safe journey .and a speedy return. Cpl. French suitably responded. Miesda.mas Devoscovi and Robertson provided the music, while Mr Tom Sullivan was M.C. Items were rendered by Miss Margaret Rodden, Messrs Gordon Stevens, Sid Ward and Tom Sullivan.
