fOur Own Correspondent L WESTPORT, August 17. The Kaimiro sailed this morning for Auckland. Rev Father J. Phelan left yestesday for Greymouth, returning tms evening. Mr J. Simpson, Karamea, left yesterda’v for Christchurch. Mr and Mrs J. Toner left for Timaru yesterday, after visiting their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. W. A Craddock. ‘The following letter from Hon. J. O’Brien, Minister of Transport and Marine, has been received by the Mayor, Mr. J, M. Robertson: “You will remember that, on my recent inspection at Westport, the question of better utilisation of the colliery reserve sections in Palmerston Street was mentioned, and it was thought that these areas might be made available to the State Housing Department or to the Railway Department, for extension of the marshalling yards. In. this connection, I have had a report submitted which indicates that the sections, by their proximity to the waterfront, railway lines, etc., would not be eagerly sought after by the Housing Department tor housing purposes when, as is the case, better situations are available elsewhere. It is also thought in the meantime, that the vacant sections would not fit in very well with any extension of the marshalling yards, but, having regard to all the factors, it is thought that the Marine Department should clear up the eye-sores whicn were apparent to me on the vacant sections and I have given directions to my Department accordingly. The work of clearing up will therefore be undertaken at an early date.” L.A.C. D. Erickson left to-day for Blenheim after spending leave after service in the Pacific area, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. Erickson, Romilly Street.
