HOSPITAL BUS SHELTER

BOROUGH COUNCIL’S DECISION Tenders are to be called immediately for the erection of a shelter tne bus passengers on the west side of High Street immediately south of Morice .Street. A decision to this effect was reached by the Greymouth Borough Council at its meeting last evening. T'he question came up' for discussion during consideration of the Works Committee’s report, the final paragraph of which read: —“The Borough Engineer submitted a plan of a bus shelter alternative to that with glassed panels. As it would now appear that the construction of a shelter must be delayed until th? matter of the closing of part of High Street has been completed _it is recommended that the Hospital Board be asked to advise as early as possible whether it is desired that the Borough Council proceed with the closure, the' Board to be advised that all charges and costs of whatsoever kind incurred in the closing of the street, including purchase from the Council of the land comprising the street, shall be a charge against the Board.”

Cr. J. B. Kent said he thought the construction of the bus shelter was being postponed indefinitely. The street might not be closed for quite a long time. Cr. F. F. Boustridge, chairman of the Works Committee, who had presented the report, said that he did not understand that the Hospital Board had definitely intimated its intention to close the road.

The Borough Engineer (Mr. A. J. Fairmaid) drew attention to the danger of putting the shelter on the road it it was not closed.

After some further discussion this paragraph in the report was adopted after the deletion of all reference to the bus shelter, the decision merely being to ask the Hospital Board to advise whether it desired the Borough Council to proceed with the closure of the road. Cr. Kent then said that he thought the bus shelter should be constructed as soon as possible on the site decided on by the Council. Cr. Hutchinson moved: "That alternative tenders be called immediately for the construction of a bus shelter on the plans prepared by the engineer; and that the shelter be erected on the west side of High Street immediately, south of Morice Street.”

Cr. P. Blanchfield seconded the motion.

Cr. G. R. Harker moved an amendment that all the words referring to the site be delted from the resolution, but this amendment lapsed for want of a seconder. Cr. W. Herring said that the engineer had referred to the- danger from traffic which would be created if the shelter were placed on the edge of the road leading to the Old People’s Home as was suggested. He thought that very little traffice ever used the road.

The Mayor (Mr. F. A. .Kitchingham) and Cr. A. L. McKav both said that they considered there would be a fair amount of danger in placing the shelter on the edge of the road before it was closed, and the Mayor moved that cons’’d Q ration of the matter be deferred till a' special meeting be held on August 31. This amendment was seconded by Cr. Boustridge. who said that the Council had to consider whether the dancer was real to warrant holding up the construction of the shelter. On being put to the vote the Mayor’s amendment was lost and Cr.

Hutchinson’s motion carried. In the course of the discussion it was explained that the final choice of a design for the shelter would be made when tenders were received tor the, two submitted by the engineer. Advice was received from the Hospital Board that the- Board had acceded to the Council’s request to grant it legal easement with regard to existing sewers, water, and gas mams in the portion of the road leading io the Old People’s Home which it was proposed to close.
