PROGRESS LEAGUE

COUNCIL DECISIONS Mr. W. D. Taylor presides at a' meeting of the Council of the Westland District Progress League last evening at the Grey Main School. The secretary (Mr. J. Saunders) reported the Main School Committee would rent a single room at 5s a night, with 2s. 6d. for every other room, arrangements to be made by the League with the caretaker for his remuneration. T The appointment of Mr. D. Mdyor as canvasser for members for the League on a commission basis was confirmed. It was decided to endeavour to arrange a public meeting at Runanga' and to form a branch there as soon as possible while a deep sea harbour was being advocated. Mr. J. M. Bunt stated information received in an interview with Mr. S. J‘ Davis, Union Steamship Company, made it clear that the deviation of M.V. Karu from Greymouth to Lyttelton on the last occasion this happened was justified, and unavoidable. , , „ The president reported on the League’s deputation to Hon. J. O’Brien, Minister of Marine, concerning a deep-sea harbour (as published in yesterday’s “Argus”). Mr. Bunt suggested that this was a time to contact all members of Parliament asking that the harbour problem be investigated. This suggestion was later adopted. The secretary said that he thought it would be best to wait for a 1 week or so to obtain replies from North Island local bodies as weight behind their agitation. Concerning statements made tlim Westport was to be West Coasts natural harbour, Mr. Bunt reported that the statement had been issued by a Parliamentary private secretary, and had nevpr been seeen by the Prime Minister. The secretary of Wellington Harbour Board wrote stating that the suggestion of a deep-sea harbour would be perused again by the chairman, and if he favourably considered the matter, it would be placed be.fore the Board. Nelson Harbour Board advised that the League’s proposals had been referred to the Nelson Progress League. Auckland Chamber of Commerce wrote stating that, while of the opinion that an all-weather West Coast port was essential, it was not in a position to choose a site. Gisborne Harbour Board wrote supporting the Grey Harbour Board in its endorsement of the Progress League’s agitation for a deep-sea harbour. Auckland Harbour Board, advised that while deeply concerned regarding a harbour on the West Coast t could not accede to the League’s proposals. -. . Westland County Council advising support for the proposal, objected to the Grey Harbour Board striking any special rate over the whole province. . .

The Grey Hospital Board advised that it would not become an associate of the League as the Board was financially supported by other local bodies. Runanga Borough Council advised it had appointed Mr. E. W- Kennedv as delegate to the League. Hon J. O’Brien wrote thanking the League for appointing him Patron, and promised his support. West Coast Sawmillers’ Association applied for membership and forwarding £5 ss. subscription. The Greymouth Housewives’ Union wrote applying for membership, and supporting the deep-sea harbour proposal. Grey County Council advised its agreement to affiliate and’ support the deep-sea harbour proposal as did Runanga Women’s Institute; Blake-town-Preston Road Citizens’ and Ratepayers’ Association (the latter advocating the installation of a municipal milk depot in Geryemouth); Grey Acclimatisation Society; Brunner Mine Workers’ Union: Greyb mouth firemen and Engine Drivers’ Union; and Ross Borough Council. A letter from a number of Cobden residents asking support for a- letter to Dr. Beeby, Director of Education, advocating the construction of a Kindergarten or a playing area in. Cobden was referred to the Youth Work Committee. As was a letter from the West Coast Swimwffig Association, advocating support f<?r a, proposal to set a youth centre in connection with the Municipal baths. OBJECTS RECOMMENDED

The Transport and Communications Committee, through Mr. A. R. Aldridge, recommended that the Main Highways Board give priority to completion of the section of the road Ruru-Kapgaroo-Crooked-River-Rot.omanu. Further recommendations were: — That the completion of the Paringa-Haast section of the Main South Highway be advocated to the Highways Board; That representations be made to the Chief Postmaster and Air Travel (N.Z.) Ltd., to resume the original contract timetable to set down and pick up Greymouth air mails at 10.15 a.na.., and 3.10 p'.m.; That representations be made to the Minister of Public Works pointing out the lack in Westland' of an aerodrome with adequate modern facilities and asking that the question of establishment of a central aerodrome with concrete runways on Kumara flats be exploited; That the Greymouth aerodrome be extended in an, easterly direction; That representations be made to the Licensing Authority, through the Transport Department, Greymouth, regarding the unsatisfactory evening, night, and Sunday taxi services in Greyfmouth, and that the Taxi Control 'Committee, as at present constituted, be reviewed and two representatives of the citizens, and the Traffic Inspector .as the representative of the Licensing Authority be included in the committee.

Referring to the aerodrome site, Mr. Robertson said that a Government aerodrome engineer had condemned immediately the sites at Coal Creek and Kumara as airfields because of the prevailing fogs. It was decided on the motion of Messrs J. B. Bluett' and Bunt that the Transport Committee investigate the possibilities of Kumara as an aerodrome and if it were considered suitable, recommend that it be included in the Public Works’ Department five year pUm. All the recommendations were approved. The Scenic and Tourist Committee recommended that the Government be approached to set aside money .to provide access, in the form of tracks, to and through scenic reserves within the area concerned by the League, such approach to be made direct to the Government Tourist and Publicity Department. —Approved. As to Industries and Commerce Committee (per Mr. L. Wicks) recommendations it was decided that the Government, be requested to indicate its rehabilitation proposals for the district. The Committee recommended that two representatives of business interests be appointed, to the Local Oil Fuel Control Committee. It was decided to ascertain the names of the Committee at present.
