Sound Effort: For a comparative noviee, Invincible made a brave showing in the National Hurdles. Near the last fence the Nigger Minstrel gelding was within two lengths of Flying Spy, but he got in too close and nearly fell. The mistake was the cause of his failing to run on in the last furlong. He may win on the flat at some early spring fixture, as he is in great heart. Finished Strongly: Last but three at the home turn in the Islington Handicap. Foxleap made a great run to get third half a head behind Arabian Night. The Foxbridge mare was in the middle of the field with half the journey covered, but was squeezed and went back several places at the four furlong post. Only for this he would have made the winner’s task harder. Easily: Although the verdict was a length Jack High was never in danger of defeat in his latest effort. The Gamble colt, sold not long ago for £l5OO, is a stylish pacer. Fit Horse: '

Colonel Vaals is sure to be fit for his Pakuranga Hunt engagement. It was intended to produce him at Trentham. Transport could not be arranged and he had to miss. He was a winner in heavy ground over seven furlongs at Ellerslie in June, so should be at home in the Jellieoe Mile this week-end. Good Showing:

On his first outing since Easter, Pensacola went well in the Woolston Hack Handicap at Riccarton. He piloted the field until the false rail, where his condition gave out, though he battled on for fifth. By Golden Eagle from Amyril, Pensacola has grown into a commanding horse, and appeals as one likely to leave the hack ranks soon. An Improver: The Irish Lancer gelding, Irish Note, ran a good fourth in the concluding event at Riccarton. He has not been overtaxed since he first sported silk, and he looks like fulfilling his early promise. Good Prospect: As a young horse Poker Face showed more ability than most in his class, and he was expected to qualify for the best classes, but through unsoundness he has done little racing. Poker Face was an easy winner at Ashburton last season. If produced in the same form at Addington on Saturday he will take beating.
