BABY GASSED. P.A. DUNEDIN, August 12. A one-year-old child, Leone Margaret Hobcraft, was fatally gassed at her home. 47 Serpentine Avenue, yesterday afternoon. The child’s mother left her with two small boys in the house for a few minutes, and when she returned, found the infant lying on the floor beside a gas stove, the taps of whicn had been turned on. The child was rushed to hospital, but attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.

BOOKMAKING CHARGE.

CHRISTCHURCH, August 12.

Clarence Arthur Frederick Trevella a hotel porter, was charged with carrying on business as a bookmaker when he appeared at a special sitting of the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon. On the application of Detective-Ser-geant A. Herron, Mr. J. J. Hurley. J.P., remanded Trevella to appear on Monday morning. Bail was allowed in self £lOO. CHRISTCHURCH BURGLARIES. CHRISTCHURCH, August 12. Burglars like alcoholic liquor. They also eat fruit. At least, those who participated in two breaking, entering and theft offences in the city last evening do, for considerable inroads were made into the stock of spirits and beer on the premises of the Crystal Mirror and Glass Coy. Ltd., 283, Tuam Street, and an orange was taken from the Times Book Club, 743 a, Colombo Street. Needless to add, these burglars were no exception to their • fellow practitioners in their fondness for other people’s cash. The day’s takings of the book club, with the exception of a threepenny piece and 4s 9d in pennies, were stolen, while the Crystal Mirror and Glass Co., Ltd., lost ■F2 15s in petty cash and an. undisclosed amount representing the employees’ tea fund.
