One of the ; early settlers of the West Coast, Mrs. Elizabeth Haste, aged 88 years, widow of Mr. James Arthur Haste, has died at Christchurch. She went to live at Rotomanu in 1900, but for the last few years she had resided in Christchurch.

Mr. W. Heffernan, of the staff of the Greymouth Army Office, who win leave to-day for Oamaru,i where ne will take up a position with the Waitaki Power Board, was met yesterday by fellow members of the staff of tne Army Office, on whose behalf Captain A. R. Curtis made a presentation of a fountain pen and a wallet. Captain Curtis expressed the good wishes of the staff, and his remarks were endorsed by Sergeant-Major S. E. Davey and Staff Sergeant R. Kay. Mr. Heffernan briefly replied.

The death of Mr. Richard John Hail occurred at Greymouth on Thursday evening. Aged 58 years, he was born at Redruth, Cornwall, and came co Waiuta about 1920, working there until his retirement three years ago, with miner’s phthisis. He had resided at Stillwater for the past 12 months. He is survived by his wire, two sons, Reginald (Stillwater) and Richard (overseas), and two daugnters, Mesdames G. H. Adams (Dobson; and A. Gage (Stillwater); also two sisters, Mesdames N. French and W. Harris (Waiuta), one brother, William (Nelson), and seven grandchildren. Deceased’s parents and one sister reside in Cornwall. The funeral, will take place at Greymouth to-day.
