TO CAPTURE CANTON RAILWAY.
CHUNGKING, July 3
A Chinese communique indicttes that Japanese troops which by-passed Herigyang have thrust a spearhead 46 miles below the city in the drive to capture the entire Canton-Hankow railway route. . The Japanese have by-passed Leiyang, 37 miles south-east of Hengyang, says the United Press. A supplementary Chinese communique reports that the Japanese at Hengyang on Saturday resorted to the continuous • use of poison gas
shells. Many of the Chinese defenders lost consciousness. Th e Chinese claim rapid progress in the counter-attack towards Siangtan. The Associated Press says that China’s chief hope is in halting the Japanese surge southwards by sucn attacks against their lengthening supplydines.
