U.S. NAVAL BASE

AT AUCKLAND. TO BE GREATLY REDUCED P.A. AUCKLAND, July 3. As a result of a great reduction which is being made in the size of the United States naval operating base in Auckland, Commodore Stanley D. Jupp, U.S.N., Commandant of the base, will leave New Zealand to undertake other duties. It is not yet known who will command the skeleton base which will be left in Auckland. Recognition of the manner in which he has performed his duties in their relationship with the life of the city will be paid at a reception which is to be held on Thursday by the Mavor (Mr J. A. C. Allum) at the Town Hall. The reception will be a mark of appreciation and goodwill to Commodore Jupp, and the guests will include representatives of many organisations and interests which have had association with the Commodore and the base of which he is Commandant. Commodore Jupp was appointed to New Zealand in September, 1942, following a change in the organisation of the South Pacific area, whicn resulted in headquarters being transferred from Auckland to a forward area, and New Zealand activities being grouped for administration as an operating base. In addition to his duties as • Commandant of the base, Commodore Jupp has also been personal representative m New Zealand of the Commander' of the South Pacific.
