£1262 ON OPENING DAY

Invercargill Bars

HOST OF GLASSES LOST.

P.A. INVERCARGILL, July 3. A decision to abandon tne principle of having bottle stores such as those in The Kelvin and The Clyde, and to obtain other premises in the city for this purpose, was made at a meeting of the Invercargill Licensing Trust to-night. It was also decided that, in future, no liquor should be sold at these stores unless it was wrapped for taking away, and that no bottles of ale should be sold over the bars. The Trust will remove the bottle departments in The' Kelvin and The Clyde as soon as it secures suitable premises for these departments. The opinion was expressed at the meeting that it was undesirable that people should be able to purchase bottles of ale at bottle stores, and then walk into the bars or lounges and consume them. It was also felt that these stores were badly placed in that they caused congestion at the entrances to the buildings. Reference was made to a large number of glasses that were stolen on the opening day and it was stated that, if matters did not improve the Trust would have to take some action. A report presented bv the Secretar 1 ' (Mr. E. Barnett) showed that at The Kelvin the number of glasses broken and stolen totalled 418, this figure being much larger than expected. . The takings on Saturday totalled £1262.
