AMUSEMENTS

Opera Rouse Finally Tc-night: “Mister Big” and “Call of the Canyon.” Next attraction (commences to-morrow, Tuesday): “The Awful Truth.” “THEiAWFUL TRUTH.” “The Awful Truth” is so terrifically entertaining, it is a menace to those with short winds and weak stomachs. Mainly responsible for this is the madcap Irene Dunne, whose deft clowning as Lucy Warriner tops all previous performances for laughs. 'Sidesplitting are her antics opposite Cary Grant, who also is a top-flight funster himself. Commencing at the Opera House to-morrow (Tuesday) the film depicts the marital mishaps of the Warriners. Wealthy and verymuch in love they come to grief in the divorce courts. Mr. Smith (a wire-haired terrier) then makes his entrance. Irene wants him, and so does Cary. By a ruse Irene wins custod'yi of the animal but the court permits Cary to visit him once a month. Cary then meets Ralph Bellamy, an oil baron, courting Irene Dunne. Cary is running around with a cabaret entertainer, but wants a reconciliation with his wife. Cary announces his engagement to a wealthy social butterfly. Miss Dunne then realises her love for her ex-scamp and sets to nail him. Posing as Cary’s sister, Irene attends the grand engagement dinner party, pretends to be drunk and feigns such inbreeding that in the resulting uproar, she and her brother are virtually “thrown out.” Miss Dunne and Joyce Compton sing and the star performs a mirth-provoking dance specialty ■with Ralph Bellamy. Others prominent are Cecil Conningham, Alexander D’Arcy, Robert Allen, Esther Dale and Robert Warwick. -

Regent Theatre

Finally to-night: “Shadow Of A Doubt.” Commencing Tuesday: “Dr. Gillespie’s Criminal , Case” starring Lionel Barrymore, Van Johnson, Donna Reid.

“Dr. Gillespie’s Criminal Case’” which commences at the Regent Theatre on Tuesday is the latest of the popular medical series with Lionel Barrrymore as the veteran diagnostician. It carries on the adventures •of Donna Reid and her crazed sweetheart started in “Calling Dr. Gillespie.” It is the case of a young man who while insane commits crimes but when he returns to his right mind remembers nothing about them. Dr. Gillespie has his own theories about handling this particular case but the authorities in charge of the criminal will not permit him to proceed. How the case history is worked out to a successful conclusion forms a dramatic climax to this excellent story. Barrymore is again the gruff but kindly doctor with many facets of comedy, in which he-is .aided by Nat iPendleton. Other members of the cast are Marilyn Maxwell, Van Johnson, William Lundigan, Keyfe Luke, Alma Kruger, Henry O’NeilL, and Margaret O’Brien whose outstanding performance in “Journey For Marg-x aret” will not be forgotten.
