Total collections at the Greymouth Customs Office last month were £6,692 9s 5d more than in June, 1943, the totals being £30,983 19s 2d last month and £24,291 9s 9d in June last year. Details of the main items, with the figures for June 1943 in parenthesis, are: Customs. £3,630 7s 6d (£1,723 2s 2d); sales tax, £3,717 7s Id (£3,273 8s 2d); war expenses sales tax, £6,055 5s 7d (£5,270 Is lid); war expenses, other. £8,993 17s 3d (£7,202 0s sd). Quarterly figures: T'he total for the first three months of the financial year is £7,143 4s 7d more than for the corresponding period last year. The totals are £82,952 14s lOd for the quarter just past, and £75,809 10s 3u for the first quarter of the last financial year. Comparative figures of the main items for the quarter, with those for last year 'in parenthesis, are: Customs £16,928 0s 7d (£9,426 6s); sales tax £10.204 Is 9d (£9,321 16s 2d); war expenses sales tax, £16,757 3s 2d (£15,299 17s sd); war expenses, other, ' £22,984 15s 8d (£21,834 3s 7d.). As opposed to the figures for the first half of 1943, the second threemonthlv period, and the month of June, births in each corresponding period this year show a large increase, according to the vital statistics ar Greymouthi. There is a decrease in the number of deaths and marriages.

The figures for the past six months, with the figures for the corresponding period, in 1943 in parentheses, are as follows: —Births 166 (136); deaths 67 (79); marriages 46 (49); marriage by Registrar 4 (.10) For the three monthly period from March 31 to June 30, the statistics are as follows: —Births 91 ('61); deaths 38 (42); marriages 23 (28); marriages by. Registrar 2 (5). During June, 1944, deaths also show an increase. Births were 36 (20); deaths 15 (11): marriages 7 (9) ; and niarriases by Registrar 0 (1).
