HEALTH IN INDUSTRY

(By the Department of Health) Every employei’ who has introduced a health service for his employees has found 'that it has rewarded him handsomely. That is the answer to those who regard the provision of adequate measures for safeguarding health in industry as needless expenditure, as non-pro-ductive overhead. At all times the health of the worker is, of paramount importance, and the employer who sees to it that the standard of health in his plant is maintained is well repaid. This has been proved in those New Zealand factories where a proper health unit is installed. Absenteeism has been reduced to a minimum, and the result is better production. One unit, for example, which has been in operation less than a year, has been outstandingly successful in looking after the welfare of the workers. It is run on lines advised by the Department of Health. There is a trained nurse in charge of the first aid room, and daily visits are made by a doctor. The physique and temperament of the workers are studied and they are put on to work that suits them.
