PACIFIC AIR RAIDS

ON NAURU AND OTHER ENEMY ISLANDS. WASHINGTON, May 18-. Bombing raids on Wake, Nauru, Carolines, and Marshalls are reported in a Pacific Fleet communique. L:berators on Tuesday bombed Wake Island at daylight and hit objectives at Peacock Point and Wilkes Island and started a large fire. Mitchells attacked Nauru Island and hit a phos-i phate plant, anti-aircraft positions, and started fires. A Navy search ’plane probably sank a 10,000-ton Japanese freighter and medium cargo vessel in Truk Harbour. The same ’plane later bombed and strafed an airstrip and barracks in the area of Puluwat Island. Flak wounded the pilot and co-pilot, but the ’plane returned. Liberators and Mitchells bombed Ponape Island, and hit a seaplane base, airfields, dock installations and Ponape town. Other ’planes bombed enemy positions in the Marshalls hitting runways and gun positions.
