BOROUGH ELECTIONS.

(To The Editor.) Sir, —My attention has been drawn to the L.R.C. Publicity. Committee’s attack on myself in this morning’s issue, and- my first re-action was that I should be grateful for the advertisement given me. Our townsfolk comprise sane, responsible people—’people who are capable of judging for themselves, without the L.R.C. publicity endeavouring to make up their minds for them on matters that vitally affect their purses. No one knows 'better than myself that there is much to be done before our borough measures up to the standard we aim at, but since 1939 there has been a war on, and the energies of most public body men have been directed towards assisting .the Government ana the Dominion in the successful prosecution of New Zealand’s war effort. Evidently the L.R.C. wished me to spend some of my time in writing reports on what the Borough was not able to do by reason of the depletion of its staff on account of the war, and in endeavouring to live within the income of the Borough, when I was giving that time to duties as E.P.S. controller of two units, performing the weekly (and voluntarily) task of nublishing national war savings, which to-day play such an important part of war finance in this country; acting as chairman of the Bomber Bonds campaign, and West Coast hon. secretary for all the war loans raised in the Dominion. lam prepared to allow the electors to consider my work and efforts for the town and district, and judge whether or not I have measured, up to the standards they would ask of me. . I am, etc., J. SAUNDERS.
