RECREATION GROUND

IMPROVEMENTS TO NORTHERN END.

Improvements to the north-eastern end of the Recreation Ground which it is estimated will cost about £lB3 were decided on by the Greymouth Borough Council at its meeting last evening. The Council had before it a report on the matter prepared by the engineer (Mr A. J. Fairmaid) as a result' of representations made to the Council at its last meeting by the West Coast Cricket Association; and a letter was also received from the West Coast Council of Sport expressing the hope that the Council would consider giving attention to both the northern and southern ends of the ground. The engineer’s report said that a survey of the north-eastern end of the Recreation Ground showed that the surface as now’ restored was generally above the level of the surface as designed after the comprehensive survey of the whole ground in 1928. There appeared to be sufficient material already on the ground but the margin was small and a small quantity might be required to complete the grading. Such material as might be' required would be available from the road and footpath formation work now being undertaken in High and Shakespeare Streets, and in Paroa Road. It was recommended that the ground be ploughed forthwith, that it be allowed to lie fallow for. say two months, and that it then be cultivaed to expose unwanted roots and other rubbish. Finally, the required grading should, receive attention and the area should be limed and sown down in grass. The area considered, the whole f of the land in a rough state between the mowed area and the boundaries of the Makura Croquet and the United Tennis Clubs, amounted to 1acres and the total .area to be attended to would be approximately two acres to effect good junction with the present mowed area. The estimated cost of the work was £lB3 The report was unanimously adopted.
