HOKITIKA NOTES

LOur Own Correspondentj. HOKITIKA, May 16. The death occurred at Westland Hospital of Mrs Jessie Benjamin, wife of Mr A. Benjamin, managingeditor of the Hokitika “Guardian. A native of Hokitika, 65 years of age, she was the youngest daughter ot the late Mr and Mrs Robert Johnson of Greymouth, and was populai in the town and district, having been an ardent worker in many worthy causes. She was the only surviving member of the Lady Liverpool Committee which assisted the returned soldiers during the last war, and was a member of the Womens Institute, the Church Guild, and Hokitika Croquet Club. The late, Mrs Benjamin _ had a seizure on 1 Thursday morning of last week, and had remained in the hospital, suffering a further attack the following morning from which she did not recover. She is survived by her husband, two brothers and two sisters, who will have the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends. The funeral took place at the Hokitika Cemetery this afternoon. The Gael arrived at noon on Saturday with cattle from South Westland? Quite a crowd watched the cattle being unloaded. The vessel will load cargo for Jackson Bay, sailing on Monday. At the annual meeting of the Hokitika Kindergarten, the following officers were elected: President, Mrs Rowe; vice-presidents, Mesdames Parkhill, Lawn and Andrae; secretary, Mrs Rutland; committee, Mesdames Ross. Richards. Renton, Coxhill, Hutchison an f i Stuart; auditor, Mrs Dawe. The president said the Kindergarten would require every encouragement in the present year. Every effort had been made to obtain ‘a qualified teacher but without avail. Miss Reynish, a junior teacher, was carrying on and doing excellent work. The Armed Forces Appeal Board sitting at Hokitika adjourned the following appeals sine die: T. F. Condon, F J.' Williams, and Edward Black (farmers), J. W. Richards, K. G. Hewlett and R. G. Foster (farm hands). The above appeals were supported by the Primary Production Council. The appeal for W. E. McDermott (bushman) was adjourned sine die. The following * appeals were adjourned till next sitting: C. F. W. Schroder, N. V. Paganini, P S McCormack and W. R. Fairhall.
