A Mudlark: After being a winner three times as a four-year-old, Alexcelia went through last season without- getting her name on the winning list. Previous to her win last Saturday she had been placed three times. Being by Captain Bunsby her ability to handle heavy ground is easily understood. Silver Wings, dam of Alexcelia, was a half-sister by Tea Tray to Inflation, but her race record was nothing like as good as that of her half-brother. May Go Further: The manner in which .Silver Sal succeeded in her race at Ashburton gave the Impression that this young Salmagundi mare is likely to prove more than useful over a journey. Her darn Silver Memory is a halfsister to those good gallopers Membo and Nightcalm.

To Resume: Flahuluk, the top-weight in the Apprentices’ Handicap at Otaki was one of the -most promising of the hacks in the north at the latter end of the last racing season, but injuries necessitated his being spelled. He may not be quite his best yet, but with .a race or two he will measure up. By Musketoon from Elope this four-year-old gave the impression that he would make a fine stayer and as he handles heavy ground to perfection, he is worth watching. Improved by Outing: The race he had at New Plymouth where he made an excellent showing, worked the desired improvement in Whero, and he ran out a fairly easy winner in the hurdle race at Hawera last Saturday. A son of Iliad out of the Absurd mare Black Cat he is a member of Doc. Knapp’s strong team. Park Light who was third in the same event, and is also a member of the Knapp establishment, was a long way back in the early stages. The chestnut should benefit by the experience. Fancied at Last Attempt: There was good money to say that Tintern could win at his last start. However, second was the best he could do. Tintern is down to contest the maiden event at Otaki today. Should Stay: Hullabaloo who brought off a mild surprise in the Champion HackHandicap at Hawera, had previously shown promise over shorter journeys. The breeding of Hullabaloo suggests further success over middle distances, for his sire Baffles is a half-brother to Manna (winner of the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby), while his dam Prickles won the C.J'.C. Champagne Stakes as a two-year-old, while as a four-year-old she w'as successful in the Brabazon Handicap and the Geraldine Cup, and runner-up to that good horse Commendation in the Wainui Mile at Trentham. Racing Solidly: The six-year-ol f i Bournemouth has been racing solidly, but without much luck. His last six starts have produced a first, three seconds and a third. He. has come through his autumn racing in solid condition, and should give a good account of himself if produced .at Te Rapa.

Speedy Gelding: When he ran second to Colonel Vaals, Tarzah showed a lot of speed to be up with the winner at the distance. Lack of racing was against him then, but he has improved in the interim. Tarzah is likely to be one of the favourites for his engagement at to-day. Much Improved: One of the most improved horses in the north is Constitution who won at his last start at Te Rapa. On that occasion he revelled in the heavy conditions to outclass a field of good milers. His last run indicated ability to see out a middle distance, and he may make a good showing on the same course to-day if produced in the Makar, aka Handicap in which he is weighted at 7.8. Promising Debut: Sir Ringman made an auspicious debut as a jumper, when he finished third in the Frankton Hurdles at the Waikato meeting. After being in the middle of the field in the earlv stages, Sir Ringman was battling on in great style over the last couple of furlongs. He is a member of H. Gray’s team and he should not be long in notching a win for his owner, Dr W. C. Ring.
