[Our Own Correspondent]. HOKITIKA. Jan. 10. The Gael arrived at Jackson Bay on Sunday with men for Public Works Department jobs in the district. It is understood that some bridges now only half constructed will be completed this year by the Rope Construction Coy of Auckland. The win of Big Top in the Irving Memorial Handicap at the Reefton races on Saturday was well received in Hokitika, the owner, Mr. J. Coyle, being a well-known local carrier, while local people who went to Reefton participated in the win. The time of - Bic Ton for the mile and a quarter-was the best recorded for this distdnee on the West Coast. Mauretania another locally owned horse, ran a second, and paid a good price. \ , The Anniversary of Westland P ro " vince was observed here to-day. Tne shops were closed, but the banks and public offices remained open. ThuSwimming Club’s carnival was the only celebration! Another yacht, to be added to the fleet at Lake Kanieri, is being constructed bv Messrs G Shaw and S. Roberts of Hokitika. Mr. Shaw has already built two (of the yachts.
