EAST POLAND

CLAIMED BY SOVIET Prussian Area Proposed as Compensation [Aust. & N.Z. Press Assn.] (Rec. 8.10) LONDON, Jan. 9. The “Observer’s” diplomatic correspondent says: The Russian Government has made definite proposals for a compromise as a settlement of its territorial dispute with Poland. It is reported that the proposals of the Soviet have British and American approval. Under these proposals there would be a new RussianPolish frontier. It would be based, with certain modifications, on the 1920 Curzon Line. This would run roughly due south from the .'south-, ernmost noint of Lithunia. Russia would return Grodno and Bialystok to Poland, but Russia would retain Wilno, and the rest of East Poland. The correspondent continues; Russia and her allies, to compensate Poland, envisage Poland’s frontiers extending westwards by the inclusion of German territory.

It is believed that the Russian proposals were made before the Red Army last week crossed the Polish frontier. Poles in Moscow ATTACK GOVERNMENT IN LONDON. . , • TALK OF ALLIANCE WITH WHITE RUSSIANS. LONDON, Jan. 9. Reuter’s Moscow correspondent quotes a statement attributed to a spokesman of the Union of Polish in Moscow, and broadcast to Poland from Moscow. This is as follows: Before us lies a great task of, Reconstruction of Poland. London Fascists, treading in the footsteps of Dr. Goebbel’s propaganda, spread rumours that we intend to Sovietise Poland. No one to-dav believes such futilities. But it is true that we wish to build up a democratic parliamentary Poland, wherein the whole nation will have a say in matters of Government If we are all to safeguard the nation’s security, a centralnucleus of authority must come into being, which will preserve us from 'all Fascist designs. If there are people in London to whom the nation’s! freedom is dear, as no doubt there are, let them come out openly and courageously against all who are holding handcuffs ready for the future of Poland. Polish troops grasp better than these, professional politicians, that Poland must be rebuilt in a fraternal alliance with White Russians, Ukrainians, Czechs. The Polish soldier understands that frontier problems must be settled once and for all. The Polish soldier appreciates that if Poland, were firmly entrenched on the Baltic, ano were to be enriched by economically valuable territory, taken from the Germans, it can build peace and happiness. MR. WILLKIE’S VIEWS. ALLIES NEED OF MORAL UNDERSTANDING. (Rec. 10 40.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 9. Mr. Wendell Willkie, in the course of a broadcast address, said: The recent conferences at Moscow, Cairo and Teheran established effective militarv co-ordination for the fourgreat Allies, but thev have not yet produced sufficient political, economic, and moral understandings. Mr. Willkie continued: “The force of the people’s opinion was responsible for the fact that the conferences were, held and that nrogress has been maae. The people must now assert the ir opinion clearly to bring about those politican, economic, and moral understandings which alone can realise the great principles for which we fight.
