TIMBER WORKERS
OBSERVANCE OF HOLIDAYS WELLINGTON, Dec. 16.. The Timber Controller has advised the Timber Workers’ National Secretary (Mr F. Craig), Auckland, concerning the holiday closing down period regulation, which applies to bush sawmills and bush working only. He states that every undertaking in the sawmilling industry shall, in the week commencing December 20, be operated until not earlier than the usual closing time on Wednesday, December 22, • and in the week commencing January 3, 1944, shall be operated from a time not later than the usual commencing time on January 5. Mr Craig stated that if a worker wishes to work I from December 23 to 24 or com- I
mence on January 3, work must be made available for him, or he must be paid for the days lost. This is necessary to comply with the minimum wage order. Town timber yards and factories and box factories will observe the usual practice of working up to December 24 and resuming on January 3 unless otherW’se arranged. cannot obscure this issue.
