RUNANGA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. At the monthly meeting of the Runanga Borough Council the Mayor (Mr E. W. Kennedy) presided over Councillors S. O’Neil, A. Spark, C. Barwow. W. Williams and J. Luff. Arising from a letter from the Communitv Week Committee asking lor a grant towards the establishment ot a kindergarten, which it was proposed to establish from funds received in the Week, it was decided to aavise that the Council would give whatever assistance it could when further Progress had been made with the kindergarten project. It was decided to accept the liability for Grey Hospital morgue fees in respect of persons from the Borough. In reply to a request for extra street lights, the Grey Electric Power Board wrote stating that the circuit was overloaded and would require certain alterations. which would be effected early in the New Year. The Main Highways Board wrote asking how a suggested increased subside for highway maintenance asked for by the Council was to be spent. The Foreman was asked to supply the information. In his report the Foreman stated that 36 loads of gravel, 15 of ashes and nine of spoil had been carted. The grader worked on three days. A number of drains had been cleaned. Fortytwo feet of 24-inch pipes had been laid and 12-inch pipes at Boote’s property had been relaid. The bridge on the Dunollie-Seven Mile Road had been redecked and the railing of the bridge had been replaced. For the Works Committee, Cr. Luff recommended attention to the drain in Inverness Street. He said that roe Health Inspector compelled residents to drain into the main drain and asked what the position would be if the Health Inspector condemned the drain as unhealthy. In other towns where there was danger to health disinfectant was laid. The Mayor said the main drain was for road surface water, and anyone draining into it should send househpli-jyaste water through a grease trap, which must be kept clean. The Health Inspector would be asked periodically to see that residents kept grease traps cleaned. Cr. O’Neil said there was a definite danger to health. The matter was- referred to the Foreman. Nomination of a Borough representative on the Committee of South Island Local Bodies"was held over. It was decided to advise applicants for the use of the pound that it could not be leased as it was reserved lor impounding purposes only. It was decided to grant the application of Mr A. J. M. Currie for cancellation of a grazing license. Building permits for work amounting to £lBO were approved and accounts amounting to £149 12s lid were passed for payment. Christmas greetings were extended to the Council and the Borough staff bv the Mayor, Cr. ONeil reciprocating.
