SITTING AT GREYMOUTH The Armed Forces Appeal Board sat at Greymouth yesterday. Mr W. Meldrum presided, with him Messrs P. J. McLean and A. Panther, with Mr C. F. Shapcott as secretary. The Golden Goast Co-op. Dairy Co. (Mr E. W. Miller) appealed for A. Bowkett, butter maker. —Adjourned sine die. Runanga Co-op. Society (Mr T. Bowes) appealed for J. K. Doherty, delivery man.—Adjourned sine die. ;B. Thomson (Mr W. D. Taylor), appealed for T. A. Scalmer, bushman. Mr Thomson said that he was . engaged in timber getting and Scalmer was the only man employed by him.—Adjourned sine die. Dispatch Foundry Co. Ltd. (Mr W. P. Hambleton) appealed for W. R. Payne, litter, j. C. Drummond, welder, R. A. Ramsay, G. W. Nelson, R. R. Poschich and O. M. Beirne, ■boilermakers, J. Critchley, and R. Beumelberg, apprentice engineers, E. J'. Gilmour and W. K. Horrack, fitters and J., H. Lindbom, apprentice engineer. The appeals were against one month’s territorial training.— Exemption granted. The National Broadcasting Service (Mr H. A. S. Rollinson) appealed for W. A. Rae. technical trainee. The appeal was against territorial training. Mr Rollinson said that the staff was at a minimum and any further reduction . would interfere ■ with the efficiency of the station. — Exemption from one month’s training granted. The Chief Postmaster (Mr M. R. Aldridge) appealed against territorial training for G. L. Bertram, mechanic.— Exemption from one month’s training granted. State Coal Mines appealed for D. R. Williams, electrician, G. M. Sullivan, trucker, and J. T. Scully, mine electrician. Mr Adamson, manager of Strongman mine, said that Sullivan had been absent for 14 days without explanation in the last six months. Sullivan in evidence said that he had had certain disagreements with Mr Adamson, but considered that he could pull his weight as well as any other man. He had had certain absences without explanation—more during Mr Adamson’s term as manager than at any other time. —The appeals for Williams and Scully were adjourned sine die and that for Sullivan was adjourned for review in three months. The Greymouth Waterside Workers’ Union (Mr H. Outram) appealed against territorial training for J. Smeaton, J. Kelly, F. W. Newman and W. Lamont, waterside workers. —Exemption from one month’s training granted. A. S. Wright, boot repairer, appealed on his own behalf against territorial training. He said he had not had a holiday in nearly two and a-half years and it would be very difficulty for him to get away—Exemption from one month’s training granted. Mrs M. E. Rooney appealed for P. A. Rooney, boot repairer. The appeal was against overseas duty and no objection was raised to territorial training. Mrs C. Essex appealed for J. A. Essex. (Mr Taylor) appealed for P. A. Costelloe, assistant stone hand, and; R. S. Lee, linotypist. Mr N. V. Lovell, manager of the company, . said that Lee had been with the firm for three and a-half years. If one of the operators were absent for ; a month the work would be seriously dislocated. Costelloe was in the fourth year of his and if tie had to go to camp would have to be replaced by a man of at least the same experience. He was the only assistant in the stoneroom. Lee, in' evidence, said that the work affected his health and he thought, " the month’s training might do him good. He would like to serve in the Forces. —Exemption for Costelloe granted, Lee to be made available for a month’s training. The Greymouth Evening Star Co. Ltd,. (Mr J. W. Hannan) appealed for R. P. Pascoe, printer’s machinist. Mr A. J. Wilson, manager of the company, said that every endeavour had been made to secure additional staff. For some time the jobbing department had been working all day Saturday in an endeavour to keep abreast of the work. Pascoe had already done 21 months’ training.— . - Exemption for one month grafted. Mr Robertson said that the only other engineerhad had to take leave of absence because of ill-health, leaving Norcliffe to struggle on as best he could. Mr Sotheran said that the firm was working overtime to keep abreast of requirements, Hansen was a key man.—Exemption from one month’s territorial training granted. Westland Laundry Ltd. (Mr A. F. Cunningham) appealed for H. G. Furness, delivery man. Mr Cunningham said that Furness worked 44 hours a week. It was essential that a man on delivery should be familiar with the district—Exemption from a month’s training granted. Grey Power Board .(Mr W. S. McClymont) appealed for A. Beban. meter reader. Mr McClymont said it would take much longer than a month to train a man to replace Beban. —No exemption from training granted. Barrytown Gold Dredging Co. (Mr W. J'. Ellis) appealed for N. R. Friend, winchman, T. G. Anisy, and E. Norris, matmen. Mr Ellis said it would be impossible to spare any men for camp until replacements were available. —Adjourned till replacements are available. Kanieri Gold Dredging Co. (Mr Ellis) appealed for T. E. Lee, store foreman. Mr Ellis asked that training be postponed for three months till a road which the dredge was crossing had been replaced.—Three months’ postponement recommendMaori Gold Ltd. (Mr Jamieson) appealed for F. E. W. Stratford, winchman, and C. J. Evenden, dredge winchman. Mr D. Caithness for the company, said that the dredge had at present just enough men to carry on.—Exemption from a month’s training granted. Ngahere Gold Dredging Co. (Mr T. Blackie) appealed for J. W. McGuigan. oiler (also appealed for by Catherine McGuigan), G. Tonitto, oiler, and J. Mouat, contractor. Mr Blackie said the company would not object to McGuigan and Tonitto doing their training provided they were not asked to train at the same time. A fulli time exemption was asked for in Mouat’s case.—McGuigan was exempted till February and Tonitto till April. Mouat was exempted fulltime.
