KUMARA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. The Kumara State School Committee met on .Wednesday evening. Present were Messrs John Reedy (chairman), G. Malcolmson, .B, Becker, F. Rudkin and H. Hamer (secretary). The Headmaster (Mr. L. J. Thwaites) reported that the roll number was 74 and the average attendance 62. A good deal of sickness had affected the attendance. Some of the timber required had arrived and the soil had been delivered in the school garden. Mr. Joyce (agricultural instructor) had visited the school. On behalf of the Headmistress and himself he wished to extend the season’s greetings to members and thanked them for the co-' operation and help given him during the past vear. The chairman reported than on his recent visit to the school he had noticed a decided improvement in the appearance of the grounds, and complimented the staff and children on the general appearance of the school garden. The Canterbury Education Board advised that the school would retain the grading 111 B for the year, 1944. The Town Clerk, in reply to the committee’s enquiry, re the water supply from the Borough main, stated that the annual charge of water would be £1 10s for private premises and £2 10s for business premises, with a first connection fee of £l. Consumers were to pav for all their own fittings and pipes from the main and each connection was to be provided with a stop valve. Members discussed the matter, and it was decided that Messrs Malcolmson and Reedy meet the Borough Council and ascertain certain particulars. Mr. Malcolmson mentioned the swimming bath proposal, and asked what steps were being taken to have the bath urgently constructed. It was thought that at least £lOO would have to be raised locally. Mr. Reedv thought that perhaps the Convent School Committee might co-operate. Mr. Hamer thought it should be a public bath for the benefit of all the children in the town. Mr. Becker agreed with that proposal. Mr. Rudkin suggested that the Headmaster talk to the children before the Xmas holidays, pointing out the dangers apparent in certain localities. He also moved that the annual break-up ceremony be held on Friday, December 17, and that the secretary be asked to arrange a sunply of ice cream, etc., for the ceremony. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £5 18s. The chairman extended seasonal greetings the staff and members of the committee.

The Mayor, Mr. A. B. Spiers, presided over the monthly meeting of the Kumara Borough Council, the following being present: Crs. J. Murphy, W J. McNabb, F. Wise, R. N. May, G. Hunt, A. J. S. Fensom, B. Becker and D. W. Lawrence. Advice was received regarding the collection of kerbside rental fees, and it was resolved that accounts be sent to lessees. An application from Mr. F. Stratford for a building; permit was granted. The secretary, Kumara Kumara Volunteer Fire -Brigade, wrote asking; that nart of an open drain in Tui Street be biped and filled in to enable the Brigade to use the fire plug for training purposes. It was resolved that this work be done when labour is available. Also in response to a request from the Brigaats, it was decided to make enquiries regarding the price of 200 feet of hose. The Mayor reported that he had attended the conference of South Island Local Bodies. Further information was asked for regarding the soapstone on the Christchurch road, and it was decided to forward as much information as possible. ApplF cations to have the water connected with their property were received from Rev. Father Healy (Catholic Presbytery) and Mrs. V. Louden, ana, the secretary of the State School wrote asking when water would be available, as they wished to make application to the Education Board to have the school and the teacher’s residence connected with the water supply. It was resolved that they be advised of the conditions of connection and fees as follows: Special connection fee £1; yearly charge £1 10s for private premises and £2 10s for business premises. Consumers are to pay for all pipes and fittings from the main pine line. The chairman or the various committtees gave their reports. It was decided to call tenders for the grazing rights of recreation grounds for the Summer ffionths. Reference was made to the danger of accidents caused by obstructions on footpaths, and it was resolve! that the Town Clerk communicate with the owners requesting the removal of these obstructions. A motion of sympathv with Cr. Fensom m the loss of his wife was passed, meni-, bers standing as a mark of respect. A grand ball in aid of the St. John Ambulance Brigade will take in the Memorial Hall to-night (Friday). The Caledonian Orchestra will supply the music.
