PETROL RATION INCREASE SOUGHT. P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 22. Canterbury District Trades Council has decided to support requests for an increase in the petrol ration for private motorists by giving the coupons their full face value. A report to this effect was confirmed by the President of the Council, Mr. John Roberts, when it was referred to him to-day. airman found not guilty. P.A TIMARU, Oct. 21. A verdict of not guilty on all counts was returned by the jury, after a retirement of 54 minutes, at the retrial in the Supreme Court to-day, ot James Keith Ward, a member of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, on a charge of assaulting Charles James Keenan and thereby committing; manslaughter. Ward was alternatively charged with assaulting Keenan so as to cause him actual bodily harm, and further with assaulting Keenan. Mr. Justice Northcroft was on tne Bench. Augustus Stephens Parsons, aged 31, a butcher, of Wellington, was found not guilty by a jury on both counts, in the trial before Judge Fair on a charge of assaulting a woman so as to cause her actual bodily harm, and alternatively of common assault. Parsons was discharged. BETTING CASES. P.A. MASTERTON, Oct. 21. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M, .fined William Bradv and Herbert Hirst each £lOO. George’ Herbert Lavery £l5O, and William Daniel Darvill £5O on charges of bookmaking. P.A CHRISTCHURCH. Oct. 21. Edward Albert Colton Jordan (Mr. N. S. Bowie) pleaded guilty to a charge of printing a document, a double chart, which contained a notification on behalf of Arthur Clarence Trevella as to betting on horse races to be run. An New Zealand, i.e., the Flying Handican and the Hastings Spring Handicap to be run at the .Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s races, held on October 2, 1943. Detective Sergeant Herron said he was satisfied Jordan committed the breach through ignorance. He had said he printed double charts for Trevella since 1941. The Magistrate said it was very clearlv printed, one of the clearest he had seen. Mr. Bowie said this was the first such charge against a printer. In imposing a fine of £2 the Magistrate said an offender was liable to a fine of £2O. BANK OF N.Z. DIVIDEND. P.A. WELLINGTON. Oct. 22 The Directors of the Bank of N.Z. announce that an interim dividend at the rate of three per cent, on ordinary shares will be paid on December 4. The half-yearly dividend on long-term mortgage shares will be paid at the same date at the rate ot seven and a-half per cent, per annum, reduced bv a penny for every eightpence or part thereof on account of social and national security tax.
