BICYCLE CONVERTED

PROSECUTION AT GREYMOUTH Before Mr G. G. Chisholm, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth yesterday Benjamin Thomas Moore, a ship’s fireman, was charged with unlawfully converting to fils own use a bicycle valued at £B. the property of Arthur Martindale Ross. He pleaded guilty. Senior Sergeant G. F. Bonisch said that at about 8 p.m. on Monday, Constable Molloy saw accused riding an unlighted bicycle along Mawhera Quay. He stopped accused and while he was questioning him about riding without a light Ross came along and said the bicycle was his. He said that shortly before he had left the cvcle standing outside Gibbs Motors building, and that when he returned it was gone. Accused had no excuse to offer. The Senoir Sergeant added that this sort of thing was very prevalent in Greymouth. To the iMagistrate iaccused said it was the first time he had been in Greymouth for a long time and he hud had a day out getting drunk. He had not ridden a oicvcie for a long time and had taken it to have a ride. It was just a silly prank. To the Magistrate the Senior Sergeant said that accused had had a considerable amount of liquor at the time but he was not drunk The Magistrate fined accused £4 m default seven days’ imprisonment, warning him. to be careful in future, as he noted that about two years ago accused had had charges '.involving dishonesty against him. A first offender, charged with being found drunk in Gresson Street on Monday evening and who had spent the night in custody, was fined 10s.
