REEFTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent.] REEFTON, Oct. 19. Private M. A. Bolitho has arrived on leave from a military camp. Results to date of the Senior Men's Golf Championship:—lst Round: D. McVicar beat R. Yellowlees, 7 and 5, E. Patterson beat W. Pennington 3 and 2, C. Doyle beat A. McKenzie 3 and 2, W. August beat W. J. Humphries 2 and 1. Ist. Semi-final: W. August beat D. McVicar 4 and 2. The winner of E. Patterson and C. Doyle plays August in the final. Prizes at the Fire Brigade five hundred competition were won by Mrs. Sumner (ladies”), Mr. H;ll (gents’), chocolates, Mr. .Durwood, novelty prizes, Mrs. Simmers and Dvr. Ruthven. The funeral of the late Bernard Alborn to-day was one of the largest seen in Reef ton for a long time. The coalmines throughout the district were idle for the day. Rev. Mr. Learning of the Anglican Church, conducted the service at the house and also at the graveside. „ o a The Reefton Branch of the R.S.A., which has been revived and strengthened, entertained members of the 2nd. N.Z.E.F. on furlough at a dinner in the Gymnasium Hall recently. _ It was the largest gathering of servicemen that the Association has had for some time, over 75 'being present. Catering was in the hands of Mrs. P. Gallaher, and left nothing to be desired. Numerous toasts were honoured which included “The King” and “Our Guests,” proposed by Mr. W. G. Porter and responded to by W.O. 11. F. Scarlett, Seaman D. Potter. Private J. Douglas; “Returned Services’ Association,” proposed by Driver D. Ruthven, responded to by Mr. J. Cutbush- “Absent Comrades,” proposed bv Mr. A. F. Wells; “N.Z. Army, Navy, Air Force, Nursing and Medical Services,” proposed by Mr. G. G. M. Mitchell and!' responded to by Mr. W. Meldrum (Army), Mr. J. Duffy (Navy), Corporal G Luff (Air Force) and Mr. W. J. Duff (Nursing and Medical); “Imperial Army” proposed bv Capt. Curtis and responded to by. Mr. D. Hamill; “Australian Imperial Forces,” proposed by Captain Wood and responded to by Lieutenant-Col. Duke, M.C. Musical items were rendered by Messrs J. Duffy, D. Hamill, Major Jefcoate, W.O. 11. Scarlett Lieut.-Col. Duke, Mr. C. Walker ana Mr. G. G. M. Mitchell. Mr. Patterson was accompanist. Representatives of the Greymouth, Westport, Branches, and Waiuta and Ikamatua Sub-Branches were present. The Anglican Church flower show on Saturday drew a good attendance. Archdeacon T.
