Reports that a big slip had occurred at Lyell, in tne Buller Gorge, on Friday were evidently without foundation, as Newman Bros reported last evening ithat their cars had maintained to schedule a daily/ service through the gorge.

The Armed Forces Appeal Board will sit in Greymouth at 2 p.m. on Monday anti at. 10.30 on October 5. It will sit at Hokitika on Tuesday at 2 p.m., Reefton at 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday, and at Westport at 9.30 a.m. on the Thursday

The quarterly sitting of the Compensation Court in Greymouth commences on Monday and as there are six compensation claims, the sitting is expected to last a week. On Monday week, the Court is scheduled to sit at Westport where at present there is only one compensation claim pending. . Last week, 185 towns attained their national war savings quotas. Seventeen of the 18 chief post office centres were successful, and in 16 postal districts the full district quota was abtamed. Four additional places attained their 100th. consecutive weekly successes, namely, Marton and Aramoho in the Wanganui distinct, Takaka in the Nelson district, and Awakino, Mokau, in Taranaki.

After a long tow from Tokomaru Bay-, tne damaged trawler Waiwera, which grounded on rocks at Tokomaru Bay on September 5, arrived at Auckland on Tuesday morning. The shipwrights who undertook the salvage found the trawler badly holed, part of the keel gone and the rudder lost. The vessel was refloated after the beach had been cleared by a bulldozer. The tow was carried out by the new trawler Waimana.

Vivid lightning with heavy- thunder, characterised a severe electrical storm which swept over Auckland city and suburos before daybreak yesterday, accompanied by heavy rain. In part of Epsom tne :-torm assumed cyclonic proportions. A tremendous gale travelling from Mt. Eden towards Manukau Road left a trail of damage, broken branches and tiles torn from portions of roofs of several houses. Slates were carried away from part of the roof of Epsom Library. i

The West Coast branch of the Mothers’ Union held its annual festival in Greymouth on Tuesday, 150 members representing Westport, Reefton, Ahaura, Cobden, Kumara, Hokitika, Otira and Greymouth being present. Rev. P. Kirkham celebrated Holy Communion in the Holy Trinity Church in the morning, and Rev. C. A. Scarfe, of Ahaura, gave the address. In the afternoon, Head Deaconess J. Spencer-Smith, Christchurch, delivered an address, after which there were musical items.

M.V. Gael sailed at 3 p.m. yesterday for Hokitika. S.S. Titoki berthed at 7 a.m. yesterday and is expected to sail to-day for New Plymouth. S.S. Port Waikato may sail to-day with timber for Port Waikato. M.V. Kaj'u is expected to sail to-dav for Wellington with coal. S.S. Gabriella is expected to sail this morning with coal foi’ Wellington. S.S. Poolta should sail this afternoon for Napier with coal and timber. S.S. Karepo is exoected to sail to-morrow for Auckland with coal. S.S. Pukeko is due to-morrow to load coal for Miramar.
