CHINESE COUNTER ATTACKS SUCCEEDING. CHUNGKING, June 9. A Chinese communique says: Further heavy casualties wer&. inflicted on Japanese troops fleeing from Itu. The annihilation of Japanese forces south of the port of Sungtse is expected soon. Chinese have penetrated the suburbs of Ichang. An enemy defence line south-west of Hwajung Lake, in the Tungting region, inflicted four hundred casualties, and captured quantities of equipment. Chinese forces also recaptured three important points in the northern sector of the Upper Yangtse. General Stilwells headquarters announced that Mitchells and Warhawks attacked Hongay, 30 ™les north-east of Haiphong, Indo-China, heavily damaging coaling docks, warehouses, railroad yards, power and transmission lines. All the raiders returned.

CHUNGKING, June 8. A Chinese communique stated: Chinese forces completed the occupation of Itu, eighteen miles below Ichang. Chinese forces also are advancing toward Sungtze, a Yangtse River port, between Ichang and Shansi. Several hundred Japanese were annihilated during the captuie of a strategic point in Hupeh province. Chinese forces captured six strategic points in the vicinity of Kinhwa, south-west of Hangchow.
