(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA. June 9. In proposing Cr G. Rovyiey, wo was elected chairman by the County Council, Cr W. J: Jamieson paid a tribute to the excellent work oi the retiring chairman, Ci t • *. O’Neil. Cr Rowley had shown his ability when the Little Wanganui bridge was damaged. The southern riding deserved the chairmanship for two terms. Crs P. J. McL^ an and W. Searle supported the motion Returning thanks for election Cr Rowley said he would carry out the duties as earnestly as when nlaced in charge of the recent transport operations in South Westland. Cr O'Neil had made many visits to South Westland and had given every attention to their wants. Cr J. Donovan also paid a tribute to the work of the retiring chairman and congratulated his successor. At a meeting on Tuesday evening the following were appointed a committee to promote local subscriptions to the Liberty Loan:— Messrs A. R. Elcock (Mayor), G. Rowley (County Chairman). D. J. Evans, J. A. Murdoch, D. P. Stuart and C. H. Guthrie (sawmillers) W. H. Stopforth and G. Sutherland (business people), W. A. Jamieson and W. Searle junr. (farmers), W. J. Radford, R. Collins, D. Pettigrew (gold mining), F. Cooke, A. Buckland, T. N. Mitchell (banks). H. C. Rowe (National Savings), J. Perham, J. Young, B. King, W. M. Fraser (public servants), P. H.'Renton, R. Ford and J. R. Taylor. Mr E. W Heenan was elected chairman of the Hokitika Committee, .and Mrs M. Boyd secretary. The Mayor presided and addresses were given by Messrs Murdoch, Evans,. Rowe and Buckland. It was decided to ask either Mr J. Saunders or Mr Hav of the Central Committee to vis’t Hokitika on Friday evening to launch the campaign in the Regent Theatre with an introductory talk. It was decided that Mr Murdoch make the necessary arrangements, and with Mr T. N. Mitchell address public servants on Friday at the Courthouse at 4.30 p.m., also that Messrs Buckland and Mitchell speak at the theatres next week. Mr G. Rowley asked that speakers go to Harihari and Wataroa to explain deta Is of the loan. It was decided to accede to the request, and Mr Mitchell offered his car. It was decided to invite Ross and Kumara to send representatives to meetings of the committee each Monday at Hokitika. Mr Lawn said that from his observations all that could be secured from some were three hearty cheers, and even then some wanted two of the cheers given back. When one’ looked back over the war days of 1914-18 one remembered wonderful efforts of some people to help the patriotic cause, nothing was too big to tackle, and they made a big success of all their efforts. Some could take a lesson from the citizens of those days. He would organise a big patriotic concert during the final week and to make this a major effort the committee could organise a final drive at the theatre. Last week Hokitika raised £504 Os 4d in national savings, being £334 Os 4d over the quota.
