Opens in U.S.

MR ROOSEVELT’S MESSAGE.

(Rec. 5.5.) RUGBY, May 18. The United Nations Conference on Food and Agriculture opened at Hot Springs, Virginia, to-day. A message from President Roosevelt, outlinng the importance of food and agriculture during the war and post-war periods was read by the temporary chairman, Judge Marvin Jones. The message said: “Each nation individually and all the nations collectively must undertake responsibilities. They must take all the necessary steps to develop world food producton, so that it will be adequate to meet the essential nutritional needs of the world population. They must see to it that no hindrances, whether of international trade, of transportation, or of internal distribution will be allowed to prevent any nation or group of citizens wthin a nation from obtaining the food necessary to health.” —8.0.W. Mr. Roosevelt reminded delegates that the broad objectives for which the United Nations were working had been stated in the Atlantic Charter, the United Nations declaration, also at the meeting of the American- Republics at Rio‘ de Janeiro. He added that the purpose of the Conference was to consider how best to further those policies with regard to the consumption, production and distribution of food and other agricultural products after the war. Judge Marvin Jones, head of the American delegation, was chosen as chairman of the Conference. English was selected as the official language. The Conference is expected to end not later than June 3.
