Mr T Trowland, Railway Transportation Inspector, Wellington, is visiting the district.

The Bishop of Nelson (Rt. Rev. P. W. Stevenson) will visit Greymouth this week-end.

The funeral of Mr John Samuel Geoghegan of Dobson took place yesterday at the Sillwater Cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. C. A. Scarfe.

Mr. B. Stephens, of the Mechanicians Branch of the Post and telegraph Deoartment, who has been stationed. 'at Greymouth for the past two years, will leave this morning on transfer to Christchurch.

T'he death occured in Wellington on Monday of Mr Gerald (Tim) Keating, aged 53. A native of Greymouth, and a son of the late John Keating, he left to reside in Wellington many years ago. He had been in ill-health for some time. He is survived by his wife.

The funeral of Mr John Donovan Cullen took place at Karoro Cemetery yesterday and was largely attended, the cortege including representatives of the Public Works Department staff at Greymouth and the various sports bodies with which deceased had been associated. Rev. Father Gregory celebrated Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, and Rev. Father Long assisted by Rev. Father Flaherty conducted the service at the graveside.

The Victoria Cross has been awarded posthumously to Acting-Captain Frederick Thornton Peters, D. 5.0., D.S.C., R.N., for valour in taking His Majesty's ship Walney on an enterprise of desperate hazard into the harbour of Oran on November 8. Capt, Feters led his force through a boom towards the jetty in face of point blank fire from shore batteries. Blinded in one eye, he alone of 17 officers and men on the bridge survived. His ship reached the jetty disabled and abalze, and went down with colours flying. Capt. Peters lost his life in a later special mission.

The death occurred at Greymouth last evening of Mr. Charles Thomas Tassell, Assistant-Supervisee of the Telegraph Branch of the Post and Telegraph Department, after a lengthy illness. He was born at Walthamstow, Essex, England, and had been in New Zealand for 39 years and for six and a half years in Greymouth. Before that he was four years in Hokitika, and was also stationed in Wellington and Wanganui. He had been. 32 years with the P. & T. Department. He served for four years in the Great War. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Misses Audrey and Marie Tassell. and one son, Lawence, all of Cobden, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C, T. Tassell of Marton, two sisters, Mrs. Hunn, of Wellington, and Miss Maud Tassell of Marton, and one brother, George (Trentham Military Post Office).
