The following, is the report of the Director of the Reefton School of Mines for April: The attendance at all of the school’s classes still continues to be excellent. The rolls as at April 30 would stand as follows: Reefton—First class colliery manager’s certificate 1, second class colliery manager’s certificate 3, underviewers’ certificate 2, deputies’ certificate 5, gas testing certificate 12, preparatory 1, surveying 1-; total 25. Waiuta — Battery superintendent’s certificate 1, surveying 1; total 2. Wallsend —Underviewer’s certificate 4, deputy’s certificate 3, gas testing certificate 1; total 8. Blackball — Second class colliery manager’s certificate 2, underviewer’s certificate 2, deputy's certificate 2, gas testing certificate 1; total 7. In addition a class of fourteen members liafe been formed in Wallsend for the purpose of instructing shiftmen in the correct methods of installing and maintaining the various mechanical devices and machinery underground. It is of an experimental character and although under the control of Mr F. Lockington is being conducted under the auspices of the school. The talks to the local school boys as well as the First Aid class have been continued as usual. The Director lias also had a very busy month from the assaying point of view. In all 37 samples were received as follows: Quartz samples 29, coal dust samples 4, bullion assays 4; total 37.
