SOLDIER KILLED

FOUR OTHERS INJURED.

P.A. ASHBURTON, May 17. One soldier was killed and four others were injured—two slightly—when a truck in which they were travelling overturned on the Greenstreet Road near Ashburton at 12.30 p.m. to-day. They were-— Killed:

Private Albert Ernest King, aged 20, son of Mr G. A. King,. 107 Arthur Street, Dunedin.

Injured:

Lance-Corporal Walter Russell Fox, aged 20, single, son of Mrs E. Fox, 75 Barr Street, Mornington, Dunedin; severe head injuries and general abrasions. Condition fair. Private Andrew Roger Harvey, aged 28, married, Waikaka Rural, Gore, fracture of thigh and general injuries. Condition fair. The injured soldiers were admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital. King, who received multiple injuries, including head injuries, died just before admission. Two other soldiers who received minor injuries were treated as out-patents.

The truck, which belonged to the Army, contained seven men who had been digging potatoes on the Greenstreet property of Mi’ W. J. Beatty, Cambridge Street, Ashburton. It was being driven along the road by Private Thomas E. H. Munro, of Dunedin, when it got out of control in loose gravel and overturned. The vehicle was not badly damaged.
