Orakau Lady Reynard Kentish NOTES FOR TO-DAY. The principal flat races will be the Makaraka Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, and the Electric Handicap, six furlongs, and the prospects in these are being freely discussed. On their forward running in the Foley Memorial Handicap at Ellerslie on May 1, Sea-law (second) and Foxola (fifth) should have excellent chances. Sea-law is in splendid order at present and if the track does not become very heavy he should take a lot of beating. However, wherever he is, Foxola should not be far away, especially as she will meet him on 51b. better terms on this occasion. Foxola is one of the most

consistent horses racing and it is in her favour that she acts well in any

kind of going. The top-weight, Regal Fox has failed in his latest races, but he likes soft ground and he is not out of it with 9.4. Regal Fox is set to meet Foxola on 21b. better terms than when she beat him by a nose in the first division of the Ohinemuri Cup on March 20. Neenah has yet to prove his worth over a middle distance. Up to a mile his form has been attractive and there is no reason why he should not be relatively as good over longer journeys. Neenah belongs to a family that has produced some sound stayers and his breeding would indicate that middle distances will not be beyond him. Beau Leon and Clinch are good handicap performers who have reached favourable positions in the weights as a result of recent failures. If they, were to reproduce their old form they would have excellent prospects, but recent running indicates that they have deteriorated. Volifox should be .assisted by her excellent condition and Marble Fox is a distinct possibility. The erratic Foxlore, having come through his autymn racing particularly well, promises to strip one of the fittest horses in the field and he may be very dangerous. Justina and Foxsen are capable of good efforts with their light weights and Air Port may have to be reckoned with if the track is very heavy. Recent form does not say much for the chances of Hogarth, Sir Cameron, Chain Acre, Irate and Kinsman, although Hogarth was fourth at his last start at Feilding on Easter Monday. Possibly Hogarth is the likeliest of this division and he has surprised more than once previously. The state of the going on the day may have an influence on the final summing-up, although at this stage some who may find favour are Foxola, Sea-law, Foxlore and Regal Fox. Some smart sprinters are engaged in the Electric Handicap, which bears an open aspect. The three-year-old Orakau is nicely placed and should have excellent prospects. Babrow and Merry Vaals, both trained by R. J. Mateer at Matamata, are likely to run well, and Kentish may have to be considered even though he has failed in his latest races. Lack of recent racing may be against Radiant Vaals and Joy Vaals, who have been off the scene for a few months, but they may be. forward enough for prominent showings. Radiant Vaals and Joy Vaals are in their element when the ground is soft.

Betterman has performed very creditablj' at recent meetings, in the south and should give a good account of himself. The improving Lowry Bay, who likes the ground heavy, may also have to be reckoned with. Water Vixen and Lady Reynard are recent graduates from the hack class and they should run solid races. Hunting King is another improver and in the past Gold Money Song .and Hasten have done best when the ground has been soft. Esquire is capable of a forward showing if in the'right mood, but improvement upon recent form will be necessary if Billy Peach, Town Section and Gaymiss are to have winning chances. Manuma has shown no form lately, but she is improving in condition each week. The early fancies may include Orakau, Lady Reynard, Babrow, Betterman and Kentish.
