RUNANGA NOTES

Lance Corporal Kevin Martini has returned home. Private J. Summers arrived on Monday.

Mr and Mrs A. Campbell, who have been spending a holiday at Christchurch, returned home on Tuesday. Miss Eileen Campbell is at present visiting Christchurch. Master P. Whitehead was discharged from the Grey River Hospital on Tuesday. A social for the Standard VI. pupils of the Runanga State School was held in the school rooms recently. Items were given by the following: Myra Hadcroft and Shirley Patterson, piano duet; Anne Worgan, piano solo; Billy Dunn, “Lights of Home”; Jean Flood and Gwen Reid, “Alma’s Tune”; and Phyllis Clelland, “Shores of Tripoli”. Music for dancing was supplied by Owen Hinks and Mr P. Heath (Headmaster). The evening was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.

The usual meeting of the Runanga Branch of the Labour Party was held in the Miners’ Hall on Monday 10th. Mr. S. Morris presided over a failattendance of members. Letters were received from Buller L.R.C. and the Hon. W. Nash. An invitation was. extended to the National Secretary of the. New Zealand Labour Party and the Chairman of the Rehabilitation Board to address a meeting in the Runanga' State Miners’ Hall. The delegate to the Easter Conference. <jf the Labour Party gave a lengthy ‘report on the main .items of the Conference which involved many questions. A long discussion followed, after which the delegate’s action was endorsed, many speakers expressing their pleasure' at learning of the unity and the great work of the Conference. Arrangements are well in hand for the holding of the annual Labour Party ball on c June 9, £8 5s being collected amongst the members present to meet, the preliminary expenses for what is expected to be a very successful ball. £1 was donated to the’ Election Campaign Fund. The secretary reported that subscriptions are coming in from old and new members quite freely.
