• The annual meeting of the Westport branch of the bv.Z. Farmers’ Union was held in the County Chambers. Mr H. V: Palmer presided, and the .annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. A vote of thanks to the Chairman for his services on behalf of the branch during the year was recorded. Officers were elected as follows: —President, Mr H. V. Palmer; Vice-Presidents, Messrs Durkin and Bruning; Treasurer, Mr C. J. Lemon; Secretary, Mr .J'. Radford; Auditor, Mr P. C. Bowater; Provincial Delegates, Messrs Palmer and Durkin; Executive Committee. Messrs W. H. Martin, S. Lowther. D. J. Archer, J. C. Dixon, R. Stephen, L. Powell, F. Mitchell and officers. The matters of the Okari Road and also of the Bradshaw Lake drainage were discussed. Mr Archer gave details of representations made by the Buller County Council in reference to these works. It was decided to remind the Rehabilitation Board to give consideration to these works when labour is available. A resolution emphatically protesting against the low price of butterfat and demanding a substantial increase was passed, and it was decided to coney the same to the N.Z. Dairy Board. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings. The President (Mr H. V. Palmer), presented his report as follows:—Since last annual meeting there has been little interest taken in the affairs of the branch. This state of affairs was probably due to a number of causes. Firstly, meetings were fairly well attended during the period when the land clearing and pakihi deelopment schemes were being carried out, but since then there has not been any particular work of local importance to interest members; again, shortage of labour on the farms and shortage of petrol have also had their effect. As it appeared unlikely that a reasonable attendance would be attained at meetings, I decided not to call the members together until business of importance was required to be transacted or until I was assured a sufficient attendance would be obtained. During the year I have attended to a number of matters on behalf of the branch. I have been your representative on the Production Committee and on the committee controlling the supply of mineral spirit and also on the Transport Board. I also kept in touch with the Member for the District (Hon. P. C. Webb), during his visits, and discussed a number of matters of interest with him. I have to thank Mr Webb for the consideration at all times shown to me as your representative. On account of the absence of meetings, expenditure has been practically nil, and the membership levies recently received from the West Coast Provincial Executive will consequently reduce the branch’s indebtedness, though our accounts will show a small sum in arrears. I trust that during the coming season conditions will be better .and that greater interest will be shown in the affairs of the Union.

At the meeting of the Buller Rugby Union’s Management Committee there were present: Messrs J. P. ’ McEnaney (Chairman), T. Scanlon, V. Goodall, A. Reid, H. Taylor, H. Casey, R.' Pratt, F. McHerron and W. A. Craddock (Secretary). It was resolved that the Union vote for A. A. Baker and E. V. Phillips for the positions of Vice-Presidents of the N.Z. Rugby Football Union and A. A. Adams, W. A. Craddock and W. A. H. Olliver for the South Island Council. That Messrs J. McEnaney and W. Craddock represent the Buller Union as delegates to the Buller Council of Sport; that the Ranger Club be forwarded an explanation re. combined teams non-fulfilling of their fixture with Rangers at Westport on Saturday, May 8; that R. McBride and J. McGhie be granted permission to play Rugby pending confirmation from the N.Z. Rugby Union; that the Secretary write the Nelson Union re. the holding of the Seddon Shield Districts’ Primary School Tournament this season and advise that this Union is prepared to run

same; that the nomination of a Pirate third grade team in the Phillips Cup and Foote Shield Competition .be accepted.
