WAIUTA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent.! Advice has been received by his mother Mrs. F. Pascoe, that her son, Private 1 Reg. Pascoe, died of wounds, on March 23. Reg. who was a popular local boy, was 23 years of age, and left New Zealand' with the First Echelon, seeing through. the Greece and Crete campaigns, and later that in the El Alamein area. Always ready to help the other fellow, Reg. was very popular. He was educated at the Waiuta school, and a’s a tribute to his memory;, the school flag was flown at half-mast during the week-end. To the bereaved, is extended the sincere sympathy of the community. Messrs W: T. Hempseed, tend P. Corcoran who recently met with accidents are making good progress.

Mrs. C. Reid who has been an inmate of the Reefton Hospital, has returned home, and is making satisfactory progress. z Mr. and Mrs. N. Forrest, Mr. and Mrs. D. Thompson, and Messrs Kennedy and Forrest of Runanga were week-end visitors to the township. The Miners’ Hall was well tilled on Friday evening, when a welcome home was tendered to Private Mick Kennedy, who was recently invalided home after over two years service in the Middle East. Music for the dancing was provided by Mrs. Devescovi, and Mr. W. H. Lines Extras being contributed by Mesdames R. Robertson, S. Ramsden, and Mr. E. Faulsham, while Mr. S. Ramsden had charge of the floor. During the supper interval, Mr. J. Rodden, Chairman, Soldiers’ Entertainment Committee, extended a hearty welcome back to the guest of the evening, and presented him with an envelope, from the residents. Private Kennedy suitably responded, and thanked the people for their gift, his only regret was that his mates, were not present with him. A competition held during the evening was won by Mr. N. Forrest. A happy gathering concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” At the monthly meeting of the Waiuta branch of the Labour Party held in the Library on Sunday evening, Mr. Gordon Ward (President) was in the chair, and there was a good attendance. A good deal of routine business was transacted and it was decided to hold a sports meeting on the Recreation Ground on Saturday, April 17, when a well varied programme of chopping, athletic, and novelty events will be presented. As funds will be needed to light the coming election, the opinion was expressed, that the whole-hearted support of the community would be expected. Mr. W. Hynes, the well known local disciple of “Isaac Walton,” recently landed an eel, which weighed twenty-three pounds, and was lour feet six inches in length.
