Goods traffic eastward through the Otira tunnel in the week ended on Saturday totalled 19,031 tons. The total for the corresponding week last year was 12,511, tons, and for 1941, 15,993 tons.

The fourth rase of infantile paralysis in the Greymouth district, a child aged 10 years was admitted to the Grey . River Hospital yesterday morning. The first death from the disease occurred early yesterday morning, the victim being a married woman aged 30, from Ahaura. The condition of the other three patients is reported to be satisfactory.

In Harihari and surrounding districts the reopening of 'the Big Wanganui River bridge has been coupled as a topic of discussion with the grand wind-up ball being held on Saturday evening next at the Harihari Hall to mark the restoration ot the bridge. A large crowd is expected, and the l Caledonian orchestra has been engaged for the occasion. The proceeds will be devoted to the Red Cross.

A meeting of zone wardens of the Greymouth E.P.S. was held last evening to consider reports on the recent black-out trials in the town. Various matters were discussed and special mention was made of the difficulty caused by various signals being used in succession. It was decided to refer the matter to the central committee, with a recommendatoin that the signals be given simultaneously.

Mrs Brereton presided over the monthly meeting of the Kotuku Women’s institute.• In the competition •‘Something made out of scraps of material,” Mrs Priest and Mrs Brereton were equal first, with Mrs Molloy second. Mrs Brereton won a competition for a vase of foliage, with Mrs Bell and Mrs Nestor second. The social half-hour was conducted by Mrs Priest and Mrs Dalziel. The hostesses, Mrs .Bell and Mrs Guenole, served supper.

Rev. E. S. Hoddinott presided over the annual meeting of members of St. Paul’s Methodist Church on Sunday. Smith.’ The outgoing officers and those who had been responsible for the regular decoration of the church were accorded votes of thanks.

The subject of the first debate “That the proposed new harbour at Greymouth is desirable and warranted for the future prosperity of Westland” was affirmed by Messrs A. Keown, R. McDonald and F. Baxendale. Messrs W. Williams. Ron McTaggart and H. Webb were the. negative team. The subject of the second debate was “That the most effective post war plan is an efficient international polite system.” The affirmative team was Messrs S. Braithwaite, R. Bowman and S. Kennedy. Messrs L. O’Loughlin, W. Patterson and R. McTaggart were the negative team. Criticisms were given by the leader, Mr W. Wick.
