A fatal accident took place at the Cowper Street level crossing at about 7.40 a.m. on Saturday when Mrs. Eileen Catherine Barson, aged 27, of 1 Buccleugh Street, Greymouth, was struck by the Greymouth-Hoki-tika mixed train. Mrs. Barson was killed instantly. ®The train had left Greymouth at about 7.35 a.m. It is stated that the fireman saw a person near the engine but it was too late to stop the train. The woman’s body which was in a mutilated condition, was not identified for several hours. Mrs. Barson leaves her husband and 3 children. An inquest was opened before Mr. G. G. Chisholm, Coroner, on Saturday afternoon and, after evidence of identification had been given by Allan Herbert Murphy, was adjourned sine die.
