RUNANGA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) , Mr R. J. Armstrong presided at tne monthly meeting of the Runanga School Committee which was held on Tuesday evening. Present were Mesdames W. Wright and R. Barxer, Messrs J. Duggan, C. Kennedy. 1'• Oakley, W. Pattinson, R. Ewen (secretar yO and P. Heath (headmaster). An apology for absence was received from Mr Thompson. The headmaster s report to date was: Roll 225, attendance 202. Staff all present. Buildings in order, the repairs mentioned in last report have been effected. Grounds: The weather has held up all projected activities. Apparatus m order. The milk . issue began on February 25. The Government him cameraman paid a visit on March 9, school nurse on March 12, and the drill instructress on March 23. Tne pianos have been tuned and the primer instrument . has been repaired. April 5 has been fixed as the date for the school concert. It was decided to write to Mr W. Wick, senr., thanking him for his many years’ service as trustee, but saying that it had been decided to appo'nt a member of the committee to that position. Mr C. Kennedy! was appointed the new trustee. A request by the W.W.S.A. for the school piano to be let out tor their monthly function was put co the committee and declined. The chairman said that the piano was really the children’s property. The chairman extended the committee’s congratulations to the staff and children for the school’s goed effort in i winning the primary inter-school snorts shield. Advice was received from the Education Board that attention would be given to the defective downpipes at the school. A further examination of the school would be made for borer. The headmaster reported that there were a number of cases af measles and colds at the school. It was decided to hold a farewell function on Friday; for Mr J. Martin who is shortly leaving the district on transfer to Dovedale. The chairman said that Mr Martin had often acted as headmaster and that the committee would be sorry to lose him. Mr J. Martin, who has been a laypreacher in the district for the past 18 months, conducted his final service at St. Thomas’, Runanga. on Sunday evening. At a farewell after the service the vicar (Rev. E. O. Harding) presented Mr Martin with a smoker’s companion. Messrs J. Almond (People’s Warden). F. J. Smith (Vicars Warden) and R.'Ewen (Church Warden) also spoke. Presentations to Mrs Martin and to Mrs J. Re'd, who leaves shortly for Christchurch, have been made b\t the Mothers’ Union end Ladies’ Church Guild. Mr G. Eveington and Mrs S. R~ Eyeington Jett yesterday for Inangahua Junction. The Runanga swimming baths have been closed until next season.
