The Public Works Department completed temporary decking over the bridge of the Big Wanganui on Tuesday evening, and the passenger buses and timber lorries were then able to use the bridge. Ims proved a boon as the flooded condition of. the river prevented the punt being used. The Department made a special effort to get the bridge decked to enable large consignments of lambs to be taken out to the railhead. Fifty employees of the Department’s staff worked throughout the day in soaking rain to complete the crossing. Rain fell incessantly but the men carried on, and by 5.30 p.m. the first lorry load of lambs proceeded over the bridge. The carting of lambs continued throughout the night, and by morning great pi ogress had been made. It will, be necessary at times to remove portion of the temporary decking to enable work to proceed on the main bridge and while conditions are suitable tor the punt to work the river, this means will be continued. On Wednesday morning the passenger buses used the temporary bridge and it was very convenient for a large number of passengers. Two service buses were required to transport the passengers to South Westland on Wednesday.
