<■ Private T W. Barrett arrived last evening from camp and is spending leave at Awatuna. Mr R Gallagher, Acting-District Traffic .Manager of Railways ’is visiting the <jreymouth and Hokitika districts. Guests at Revington’s Hotel include- Mrs J. L. Mansel and Messrs M Lane and H. Blyth (ChCh.) Mr. and Mrs Chris George (Dunedin) .Mrs W. H. Green and Mrs. F. M. Wallace (Motueka). Lance-Cornoral J. Letham was met bv residents in the Miners’ Hah, Waiut.a, on Saturday evening. A presentation on behalf of the Patriotic Entertainment Committee was made by Mr. J- Rodden. Professor A. H. Tocker has been appointed acting-rector of Canterbury University College. Professor Tocker. who is 59 years of age, has been Professor of Economics at the college since 1927. He joined 'the staff in 1921 as lecturer in economics. Mr Harold MacMillan, British Minister Resident in North Africa, was slightly injured in an accident in North Africa, states a British Official Wireless message. His condition is satisfactory, and he is expected t 0 be at work again soon. Mr. MacMillan’s injury was sustained in a plane accident. The plane had just taken off when it developed eng:ne trouble and crash-landed. Mr. MacMillan and members of the crew were able to walk unaided. Mr. MacMillan spent the night in hospital. Minister of Defence has left by air to visit the Dominion Forces in the Middle East, and ,is v'siting the United States en route. On the return journey from the Middle East it is hoped that he will be able to pay a brief visit to London for discussions with the United Kingdom authorities, and also to inspect New Zealand personnel there. Mr. Jones also intends to visit New Zealand airmen in Canada. He reached Honolulu on Tuesday, • and addressed the Legislature there. He said that the use of New Zealand as a base for Allied operations against Japan removed the danger which the country faced. Mr. Jones who has gone on to Washngton, added that America had not only lived up to the commitments made before Pearl Harbour but was adequately supplying the Allied forces.
