In the presidential address at the annual meeting of the New Zealand SocietM of Accountants at Wellington last night, Mr. E. D. Wilkmson, of Auckland, said that the post-war development of industries in a manner to meet competition from oversees would necess.tate the use of modern methods of cost accounting which, allied with good management could do much to eliminate waste and reduce the cost of production. Now that the demand for such service had notably arisen it behoved the members of the society to qualify themselves thoroughly to meet the need. Mr. Wilkinson suggested that „the society should endeavour to arrange with the New Zealand University; for the establ’.snment of a degree’in accountancy. He believed that the next decade would decide whether the members of the society should remain technicians of commerce or assume the larger role of physicians or doctors of commerce.
