AWARDS FOR SERVICE. P.A. WELLINGTON, February 18. Additional awards to New Zealanders on naval service which have been approved by the King; are announced bv Mr. Fraser. They are as follows: British Empire Medal (military division) Assistant Cook Bruce Gaunpon Taylor, for bravery and endurance in the Far East. Mentioned in despatches—Temporary Sub-Lieutenant John Alexander Foster, R.N.Z.N.V.R., for distinguished services on one of His Majesty’s ships in a convoy to North Russia. Distinguished Service Cross: Temporary Lieutenant Herbert John Bull, R.N.Z.N.V.R. for bravery in the Far East. . ’ . . ... Cook Taylor was entered m the Royal New Zealand Navy on May 19 1941 for the duration of hostilities. He was reported missing after the fall of Singapore on April 15 L’42. Temporary Lieutenant Foster Jett New Zealand as a Telegraphist (hostilities only) on May 1. 1940 for service in the Royal Navy, and was promoted to his present rank on June b, 1941. ' , j n Lieutenant Bull was granted a commission in the Volunteer Reserve and left New Zealand for service In the Royal Navy (Malaya) on October 25 1940 After an escape from the enemy he arrived in New Zealand via Java on April 4, 1942 and is now serving in the New Zealand Navy. He transferred to the New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve on April 29, 1942. It was officially announced to-day that for 1943 the number of candidates to be entered as officers in the Royal New Zealand Navy for , long service will be as follows; Cadets (executive) —(age between seventeen and eighteen and eight months on 31/12/43) three. Cadets (engineering)— (age between seventeen and nineteen years on 31/12/43) one. There are no vacancies this year for Probationary Paymaster Sub Lieutenants. Candidates, besides being within the age limits prescribed above, must have passed the matriculation examination or the school certificate examination. The announcement referred solely to 1 candidates who wish to make the Royal New Zealand Navy their career in life, and had nothing to, do with service for the duration of the war only.
