HOKITIKA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent.! HOKITIKA, February 24. The rail-car service between Ross and Hokitika commenced on Monday morning, and is proving very popular. The run to and fro occupies about an hour. The rail-car on arrival from Christchurch at 7.45 stops here two minutes before continuing to Ross. The usual train from Ross now arrives at 7.5 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. The rail-car on arrival from Greymouth at 3.20 p.m. also continues to Ross, and returns to depart, from Hokitika for Christchurch at 4.30 p.m. The car provides an excellent service for the Ross school children. Messrs W. Meldrum. P. J. McLean and A. J. Panther ' left for Soutii Westland on Wednesday to hold sitt- | ings of the Armed Forces Appeal Board. Mr. W. Milliner of the Hokitika Post Office will leave this week-end to take over his new duties as Postmaster at Murchison. Mr. Milliner has been on the staff of the Hokitika I Post Office for the past nineteen years, and was an extremely popular officer. Heavy rain fell early on Wednesday morning, accompanied by a Strong north-west wind. As a result all the low-lying areas were flooded, and there was a strong flood in the river. Rivers in South Westland were flooded, and it was not possible to work the punt on the Big Wanganui At a special meeting of the Hokitika Power Board, Mr. T. P. O’Neil was voted to the chair. Westland Power Ltd. wrote asking for right of way for a transmission line on the Kahieri Road. Mr. Langford (engineer) explained that th e board had granted right of way to Kanieri Electric Ltd in 1937 without consulting Westland Power Ltd. The latter now raised the question of going through private property and paying compensation. The matter having been referred to the Public Works Department, the board decided to await its decision. Westland Power Ltd. also wrote in regard to removal of plant. Mr. Langford explained that negotations now were in progress The board decided to defer approval until the arrival of satisfactory confirmation from the Department. Westland Power Ltd. sum of £lOO on account of royalties due. The engineer promised a further £2OO in due course, Hokitika last week raised its quota of £212 in National Savings. ( At Rimu Woodstock Women’s Institute Mrs. R. Wells presided at the meeting. Despite bad weather there was an excellent attendance. Miss K. Wildbore read the aspirations. The Roll Call, was “My Favourite Authoress.” For the March meeting each member was invited to bring an article made from a sugar bag. In the social half hour, Mrs. T. Boyd was the winner of a soldiers’ competition, Mrs Wells won the word building and i Mrs’. J. Kelly won the local names and nick names, the last being highly amusing.
